reflections of Sawyer

The Great White North

The day after Christmas, we loaded up and drove north to Bath, Maine to see Sawyer's Poppa and Mimi. We ate amazing food from the moment we walked in the door until the moment we headed out- seared tuna, lobsters, oysters, you name it. Opening presents with Mimi.Taking a nap with Mimi.Big smiles for Poppa and Mimi.
And some quiet time overlooking the frozen water with Momma. All in all, our trip East was wonderful. Sawyer was an exceptional traveler and met everyone with big smiles. It was great to spend time with family, get back to the Island, eat and drink merrily, and enjoy a little down time.

Sawyer's first Christmas

Sawyer celebrated his first Christmas on the Island. Lucky for him, Santa came and visited on Christmas Eve just to make sure he knew where he was. Sawyer was pretty hesitant about the big fella but decided that as long as he didn't have to get to close that everything would be all right. Here are some pics from Christmas...
Checking out the tree with Nana.
Coloring books with Uncle Boo.Sawyer really likes other kids and his enthusiasm for his Cousin Bella kinda freaked her out sometimes. She was a really good sport about his desire to follow her around everywhere.
We got to visit Sawyer's Great Nan and Bumpa in Portland twice. They all got along swimmingly.

Great Diamond Island Visit

Just before Christmas, we headed back East to visit Dan's family for the holidays. We stopped in New Hampshire for a day and then headed north to Great Diamond Island where Sawyer's Nana has a really great little place. Despite the two feet of snow that arrived just before us we had smooth travels and good weather. Here are some pics from our time at the island and the ferry rides in and out Portland.

Kitchen cabinet explorations

Sawyer has been exploring new parts of the house. Right now, the kitchen is his favorite room. He is learning about drawers and cabinets and that they hold many treasures. He really loves the kitchen cabinet that we have left without a safety latch and filled with metal bowls and plastic tupperware. He likes to pull out everything in the cabinet, toss it around, crawl with items in his hands, and tempt the dog with his mischief...
.... and sometimes he just climbs all the way in.
Sawyer has also begun to really notice Doumri, our orange kitty. He used to think that Doumri was just an orange pillow that lives on our bed. He now realizes that the kitty is fun to touch. While Sawyer is learning to touch gently, he is also pulling fur and tails. Fortunately, Doumri has been pretty patient with him and is growing increasingly curious about little Saw himself.

Toy Car

Sawyer has been under the weather for the last few days- so the weekend was rather dull. We did get his toy car up and running, though, so he is enjoying his new toy. Here are a couple of pics of the thing. We still have some fine tuning to do but it rolls like a champ and thoroughly entertains!

Despite his cold, Sawyer was up for a good wrestle. Here is a pic of us that Dan caught- looks like Saw managed to pin me!

new project

Here is our latest project: Dan and I had some time over Thanksgiving to get started on our first toy car for Sawyer. Here are the early stages. We designed this little car- I cut out the body and the fenders with the scroll saw out of an oak board. Dan turned the wheels on the lathe out of an old walnut log. We got most of it put together- just need to get the axles affixed and the wheels on and it will be up and running! Stay tuned for the final results!

8 months!

Sawyer is 8 months old today. We can hardly believe it.

Thanksgiving

We had a really great Thanksgiving. My folks came out from DC for a few days and we had a really nice time. Here are some pics from their visit. See Sawyer's two bottom teeth?
Practicing standing in the kitchen.
Sawyer, Grandpaji, Omi, and I went for a really nice walk the day before Thanksgiving. We stopped for sandwiches. Sawyer has been totally fascinated with Grandpaji's beard.
Omi brought some books from my childhood including two Dutch books that Sawyer just loved. She was kind enough to translate both books for Sawyer, unfortunately the nice Dutch rhymes didn't translate very well. I plan to try to reinterpret the stories so that they make nice rhymes.
Hanging out... more beard curiosity.
I made more progress on Sawyer's Brown Bear mobile. Here is Brown Bear and his trusty friends before they got hung up on the mobile. And here is the mobile hanging on the wall before it was lofted into Sawyer's room.
Sawyer has been super cuddly lately. Here is a little pic of us.
