Sawyer is smiling more and more every day. Our friend Emily knit the little bunny for him.
Memorial Day Weekend
Miro
I picked up this Miro print, Bleu II, in Paris during our second climbing trip to Fontainbleau together. It now hangs next to the changing table and it keeps Sawyer transfixed. It is the first object that he really tracks consistently with his eyes when I take it of the wall and fly it over his head.
Six Weeks
Sawyer hit the six week mark on Thursday, 15 May. He is just over 10 lbs and is becoming much more active. His eyes continue to improve and he is becoming much more social- responding with smiles and coos. He is becoming more vocal, saying 'a', 'e', 'i', and 'o' - and recently started saying 'guh' and 'gah'.
He still likes to snuggle.
Here he is on his activity mat.
On Sunday, 18 May, Sawyer rolled over! Dan put him on his belly on the quilt Omi made. After a few push-ups, he rolled himself right over. We were all surprised. Since then, he has mostly grunted his way through his push-up regime.
And after all that work, he slept some more.

Family visits
12 May 2008
Sawyer is almost 6 weeks old- so he still spends a lot of time sleeping. This is his favorite way to nap: against someone's chest.
He still doesn't really like being changed, but he is becoming more interested in his surroundings and therefore more distractable.
The biggest news of late is that Sawyer took his first bottle. Dan has been very excited about the opportunity to feed his boy. The breastfeeding books, websites, and articles I have been scouring for information had all sorts of advice on introducing the bottle to a breastfed baby: make sure mom is out of the room, make sure baby isn't too hungry, or agitated, or sleepy, or too alert... pages and pages dedicated to accomplishing this apparently difficult task. I had briefed Dan on all the possible disaster scenarios so he wouldn't be frustrated if it took multiple attempts.
Luckily, Sawyer isn't up to the task of reading all the same literature because he decided that the bottle was absolutely no big deal and chugged 2 ounces of freshly pumped milk in two minutes flat.
And then he slept some more...

Omphaloskepsis
Omphaloskepsis, meaning contemplation of one's navel, is one of my favorite words. I think that surviving graduate school requires a great deal of navel contemplation.
Recently, I have been more focused on Sawyer's navel than my own. His umbilical cord stump seemed determined to remain a part of him until adolescence. Yesterday, 5/5/08, it finally fell off and I could give him a real bath instead of a silly sponge bath. The bathroom sink was the perfect size tub for him.
Despite the fact that he *hates* being changed- he seemed very content with the bath and really enjoyed the post-bath massage.
Here is the little I could record:
Afterwards, he was a cuddly kid in the towel.
